Decades ago, the only baby bottles available were made of glass. But glass was heavy and breakable. So when plastic bottles came along that were lighter and shatter-proof, the glass bottle became almost obsolete.
Bottle Basics
The bottles tend to differ in four main ways.
Nipples
They come in different levels. Replace them as Baby is ready for the next size or when they are cracked, discolored, or thinning. You can also choose the material: Silicone is firm; latex is softer and doesn’t last as long.
Shape
Some are straight, others contoured or wide. A bottle with a broader neck is easier to clean.
Anti-colic features
No one really knows what causes colic, but bottles with angled tops and special venting features can limit the amount of air that Baby takes in, reducing gas and spit-up.
Material
BPA-free plastic, glass, and stainless steel are all good choices if you’re looking for an unbreakable or eco-friendly bottle. Milk bottles for babies can be differentiate into PES, PP, PPSU and GLASS.
BPA
BPA stands for Bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. It is a chemical that had been used to harden plastic like Polycarbonate used for water bottles.
PP Milk Bottles
PP (Polypropylene), tough and flexible. Can only withstand temperature up to 120°C. A plastic mainly used in household items, reasonably economical. It’s transparent or can be colored using pigments. PP milk bottles will lose their transparency over time and frequent sterilization or boiling. Limited shelf life. Advised to change every 5-6 months, or where there is change in texture. Most commonly use milk bottles in the market.
PES Milk Bottles
PES (Polyethersulphone), describes the family of thermoplastic polymers. These polymers are known for their toughness and stability in high temperatures. The size change when exposed to boiling water of 180°C a new plastic to replace BPA. PES bottles has a natural honey-colored tint.
PPSU Milk Bottles
PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone) is high performance thermoplastic offering better impact resistance and chemical resistance than PP and PES. It can withstand continuous exposure to heat and still absorb tremendous impact without cracking or breaking. Commonly use in aerospace and medical devices which required repeated sterilization. It has high melting point of 207°C. It does not absorb odor or color. Naturally BPA Free.
Baby Bottle Worries
The problem with glass bottles is pretty obvious — drop one on the floor in the middle of a late-night feeding, and you’ll have a roomful of shattered glass to clean up. Glass is also heavy and cumbersome.
Plastic baby bottles are lightweight, strong, and unbreakable. In 2012, the FDA banned the use of bisphenol A in the manufacture of baby bottles and sippy cups.
